I think the most important parts of any eCommerce site are the search quality and the product pages. I've spent the last few days building the basic foundation of the product pages in StoreSuite and it's such a difficult job, because there are SO MANY variables that have to be taken into consideration on the products page. Here's a few of them:
- Is the product currently on sale?
- Is it a physical or digital product?
- Is the shipping price static or dynamic?
- Are there any custom fields for this product? (Show under "Other Details" in the video below)
- Are there any product reviews? If there are more than the number of reviews to show per page them implement review paging
- Have any related products been setup? If so show and populate the "You Recently Viewed..." panel
- Setup and display the panel containing a list of recently viewed products
- Does this product have options? If so display them on the "Add to Cart" panel
- Build the breadcrumb trail that shows how you got to the page (this took an entire day)
We will be including the usual social networking bookmark functions, but I also want to include some other useful social functions into the StoreSuite products page (which of course can be disabled).
Which social networking/marketing features would YOU like to see in an eCommerce solution? I'm taking specific social networking and marketing requests for the rest of the week. Just post a comment below...
On yeah, and here's the video of the product pages.

Couple of thoughts:
1) A big thing to consider when building an ecommerce system is flexibility for the future, because every customer is going to want to do something different - especially ecommerce!!! Trust me! So make it easily customizable, and plug-in-able.
2) See number 1.

Regarding Apparel Retail Ecommerce Stores:
Every apparel item has a million attributes. Make the attribute system flexible. Plus, tie images to the attributes so that a potential customer can see different versions of the same product, for example:
A shirt has 5 colors, tie the attributes so that if the potential customer selects the blue attribute the blue shirt image displays.

Having access to multiple images on the product pages is excellent. Having access to an enlarged (perhaps pop-up) image is also terrific. Some products just don't show to good effect in what is a normal "standard image" size.
I would also like to support Comment 2. How attributes are handled is critical to some sectors.
[From Mitch: Hi Mike. The product image is clickable, and you'll see a "See more images" link under the image if there are more - I just forgot to show it in the video]

The showing of images related to the attributes is a big winner in my opinion. More often than not that is what makes a shop stand out in excellence or just average.
Another thing to consider is the ability to add comments with each product order. In this case I am looking a t-shirt shop where customizations need to be done to products... have a comment box as optional for a product order line solves this issue.
In terms of social networking I am thinking about price comparisons, brand comparisons and or product comparisons. There are millions of comparison shoppers around...
A well some thoughts that pop up out of the blue..:
- product related auto responders
- notify in case of product updates / price updates
- login to system, write your own reviews, send your reviews to friends, submit your reviews by rss,
- Ask opinion of friends on this item (with timing function to respond)
- related products, same price range products, female products, male products
- flickr images of products / youtube videos of products
- request more information on this product before buying
- recommend this product or recommend options
I'll probably think of some more when I sit down for it.

I've always liked your philosophy of doing business. E-commerce flexibility is difficult.
A stationery store has the same issue as the apparel store. Slightly different sku numbers for each colour for the same paper or different album cover patterns for multi-size journal book.
Also, cross-selling the envelopes that go with the paper or refills for a photo album should be optional pages after ADD TO CART.
We also currently create multiple layouts of the product page so that some items get laid out one way and another item page is called multiproduct so people can choose generic coloured paper but choose 10 pink, 20 green and 50 blue all on one page with a swatch / thumbnail of each down the page with qty next to each.

Hope this is the right place to post this question.
One thing sorely missing in most carts is a good way of accepting donations. Many non-profits use e-commerce and want to offer their customers a way to donate, either as they shop of during the checkout.
[From Mitch: Hi Dave. That's easy to do. You 'd set the donation up as a "digital product" i.e. an intangible product and just give it a name such as "Donate $100". Then you can integrate PayPal into your shop with 3 clicks or any other payment provider and you're done...]

Hi, Will there be any facility to link products. e.g We sell empty glass bottles and would need to show a list of accesories available for the these e.g droper and cap, cap only, flip cap, pump spray etc. Could these be shown on the same page. Obviously there would need to be a facility to decide which products link to which in the contral panel.
Many thanks, Dave
[From Mitch: Hi Dave. Each product has a list of related products which can be generated automatically or which you can specify manually, so that's how you'd do it]

Hi, Just wondering if you plan to implement and integrate the search facility to include custom fields. For example, in the video above you have set custom fields for distributor and year of release. It would be absolutely brilliant if you could allow the searching of these fields in isolation. This would enable the developer to create any number of custom searches (not just price based).
One thing I've noticed with all Interspire products is the lack of custom field integration (I'm thinking of ArticleLive). Also, when designing custom fields the developer should be able to choose the input format (such as text field, drop menu, text area, check boxes or radio buttons.
Imagine how brilliant it'd be to go to the advanced search and restrict the search to a distributor or year of release by using drop menu's. That's my dream!

Sorry, I should have been clearer. You cando what your suggesting with other carts. What we want is a donation option where they specify the amount. Not a 'product' that has an fixed cost. Thanks.
[From Mitch: Hi Dave. This wont be something that's included with the initial release as features were decided on a long time ago, but we may include it in a future release.]

Hi Mitch
From what I can see a product can be displayed showing various options such as size. Can selecting an option change the price of a product?
Regards

For digital downloads such as music or video, can you please include a link that will allow customers to preview snippets of it in Windows Media Player, Quicktime, etc?
Also, do you allow multiple files to be uploaded for one product? For example, if a customer purchases a music album, then they should expect to download multiple files (mp3 tracks). This is a better solution in this case than just zipping multiple files.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
[From Mitch: Hi VL. You can't preview the files at the moment but that's a great idea - I'll put it on the feature list. You can upload multiple unlimited files one or more at a time from the control panel for a downloadable product - you don't have to mess with zip files. You can also implement restrictions on a per-file basis including limiting the number of downloads, expiry date, etc. Hope that helps]

Just bought the full meal deal today (BETA), and I'm looking forward to developing it over the next few months. I want to sell both downloadable and physical products. I sell CD's, and I actually want to sell a CD both as download and physical (two options). One thing I find is that you have no real built in way to identify a product as downloadable, other than there is no shipping info.
