Welcome to TheStoreSuiteBlog.com!
StoreSuite is a complete PHP and MySQL e-Commerce platform that's currently being developed by us here at Interspire. It includes everything necessary to sell physical and/or digital products (eBooks, etc) online. It will integrate with all major payment gateways, is 100% HTML template driven, includes a powerful control panel as well as too many other features to list.
I am the lead developer on the product as well as co-founder of Interspire along with Ed, and as such thought it would be a good idea to start a blog about the entire development and design process.
The StoreSuite Story
We originally began development of StoreSuite back in 2005 however it stalled because our other products (specifically SendStudio and ArticleLive) were gaining astronomical popularity and taking up a significant amount of time in terms of product development and customer support.
Since then we've hired another 4 developers (bringing the total to 13) and we've systemized a lot of the every day processes involved in running Interspire. As a result I am able to once again commence development on StoreSuite.
I resumed StoreSuite development on July 5th 2007 at which time it was roughly 50% complete. I will be using this blog to talk about the complete design and development process including everything from usability to database queries and optimization (with the help of our database gurus Chris and Rod) and everything in between.
We're hoping to launch StoreSuite in Q4 2007 and this blog will serve as my scribble pad up until the release date. If you haven't already registered to be notified when StoreSuite is released you can do so here.
You can also subscribe to this blog's RSS feed here to make sure you don't miss a post. I'll generally create a new post every few days as time permits or when I finish building a new feature.

Can you please post or email a list of the "proposed" features? I've read everything available on your site and still don't have a clear idea of the feature you will release in version one.
Thanks and can't wait.
[From Mitch: Hi Kev. We still don't know what all of the features are ourselves to be honest, that's one of the reasons I started this blog. As we get closer to a beta we'll have a more complete feature list.]

Had such a disaster purchasing, installing, and setting up our current Ecommerce software. But it was the only one that was reasonably priced and had no monthly fee. KEEP on KEEPIN! I am already working on management here to let me purchase StoreSuite. And I am very excited about being able to change pages in HTML! My suggestion for now: that StoreSuite will be easily customized! 8^)

Last minute offers .... hey guys - would be great if Store Suite could allow the ability for time-driven offers - ie. if an offer is listed as available, only show for dates from {ddmmmyyy} for {x} days. I have clients who'd like to offer 'last minute' specials, but only for purchase in the coming week or two, if that makes sense ?
[From Mitch: Hey Carl! StoreSuite lets you assign "specials" by price, so you can give a product a special discount/last minute price. Is that what you had in mind?]

Hi Mitch,
what happened to your other blog at harpzon.com?
I found the posts you made there very interesting and wonder if you continue blogging there (since switching the domain to your interspire site nothing the good content is not available to the public anymore. Too bad ...
[From Mitch: Hi Tom. My blog's up and there's just a notice at the top telling people it's currently on hold because this blog is my focus along with StoreSuite for the next few weeks]

Hi Mitch,
I think the following features would be highly useful if not required for a solid eCommerce suite:
- Coupon Codes
- Payment Gateways (Paypal especially)
- Shipping Methods (UPS/FedEx)
- Unlimited Images/Photos per product
- Mulitple Store Adminstrator support
- SSL Support
- Ability to sell/show products by product stock level (if none in stock provide ability to not show product or show product with no stock message/icon).
- Tell a Friend/Email Product support.
- Upgrade support that will not wipe out your custom template/design.
- Good sales statistics (sales/hour, sales/day, sales/week, sales/year).
- Ability to clearly/easily view the payment logs in case of failure.
- Ability to accept and display customer reviews/comments on each product.
- Ability to bulk update product prices.
- Ability to sell gift certificates for the store and accept gift certificate codes as payment.
- Ability to manually add/edit customer orders. (allows for admin to take phone orders, via the site).
- Ability to support realtime exchange rates and multiple forms of currency.
- Custom customer regisation fields.
- Ability to dynamically provide product suggestions ('customers who bought this product also purchase.....).
.... That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll try and add more as I think of them.
Not sure if you have any or all of the above features already in StoreSuite but I know I would definitely be more inclined to purchase StoreSuite if these features were included.
Thanks,
G

Hello and thank you for the opportunity to keep in touch with this project via your Blog.
I provide osCommerce solutions for small business clients in Australia and many of them are wholesale customers. This leads to a requirement for multiple customer groups (if they sell Retail and Wholesale) or the ability to hide prices for the default (Public) group is they sell Wholesale only. It is not just a matter of Retail/Wholesale either. Many businesses have several customer groups that need different pricing and maybe freight options.
Another requirement Wholesale suppliers have is the ability to allow their Retailers to place an order "on account" during checkout. Offline payment options (cheque and Bank Transfer) are also required.
In general the needs of Wholesalers is not always well covered with eCommerce offerings. There may be an opportunity for StoreSuite to develop real strength in this market segment.
[From Mitch: Thanks for the feedback Michael. I am adding your requests to our To-Do feature list. Ee've had quite a few people asking about wholesale pricing, etc I think it's definitely something we will include.]

*reward points
*subscription billing/auto-reoccuring orders
*vendor login to manage their own products
*gift registry
*allow/disallow of RMA
*gift wrapping
*new arrivals product list
*top sellers product list
*upload files/ product detail

Hey Mitch,
Will StoreSuite support a 'modular' approach to functionality? - so if you want to add/remove functionality you just add/remove a module?
Alot of your competitors support this and it would allow you to release new functionality without having a whole new release.
Just a thought...
[From Mitch: Hi JB. StoreSuite is modular, yes, and most functionality is extracted into modules, including shipping and payment providers.]

Mitch,
Gerad's already posted about this ("Upgrade support that will not wipe out your custom template/design."), but i think this is a really important piece of functionality that's often neglected as it's not quite as 'sexy' as some of the other areas.
Maybe there could be an option to "Not apply upgrades to templates [as they've been customised]". It would be fantastic to get a breakdown of what the changes are to template files in each upgrade (I know a competing product drive their upgrades off a set of diff files - which actually makes applying the changes to customised templates alot easier).
Does that make sense?
Cheers,
[From Mitch: Hi JB. Makes a lot of sense, and that's exactly how we're planning to release upgrades. Our template system was finalized a few months ago so very rarely will updates include changes to existing templates.]

PLEASE code StoreSuite so that INVOICE NUMBERING is based on COMPLETED transactions only. Our Estore software uses up an Invoice Number each time someone adds/abandons a cart. This causes our completed invoices to be numerically in order but with gaps between the numbers. Drives our Finance Officer crazy!
[From Mitch: Hi Cindy, thanks for the comment. I feel your pain - our payment provider does the same thing, but StoreSuite does not use an invoice number unless the order has been completed so you have nothing to worry about :) ]

Hey Mitch,
I had been reading a lot of the comments here in your Blog, but I can’t find anybody that comment on the lack of support of different file format in other ecommerce software. Example: if I don’t want to use jpg and I want to use a swf clip for the product main graphic I will like to have the option to do it and not be limited to only jpgs. I saw an ecommerce that the company sale T-Shirts but they do not have pictures showing the products they use small swf/flash files of people wearing the T-Shirts and I find it really interesting and with a lot of potential. The progress of the Internet and the new fast connections everywhere, because of that everybody are making everything more interactive, having the option/support of different files format to describe the product will be a great feature.
Keep the good work.
Best Regards,
Aj

As a long time user of OsCommerce and CRE Loaded, can you please include the ability to bulk upload products? Another great addition would be some kind of migration tool from OSC to Store Suite or at least a tutorial on the best way to do it. I'm sure this alone would bring hundreds of unhappy OSC users over to Store Suite
[From Mitch: Hi Paul. StoreSuite will be able t bulk import from CSV and from a host of open source and commercial shopping carts, including OSCommerce.]

I think comment 4 regarding last minute offers (timed) is great. Along that thought, we have clients who want to offer pre-orders: Products not yet in stock, that customers can order, but not be charged until shipped. Another feature that would be great is a 'per unit' field with default set at 'each'. So for products, the unit cost could be: each, box, pack, package, carton, bag. This would help shipping calculations (x,y) also. And for sites selling services, the 'per unit' could be: hour, day, project, trip, visit.

I would without doubt add SEO URLs as a standard feature. Mode-Rewrite.
I'm glad someone has decided to build a usable eCommerce Store (Off Shelf) as the current available options are very dated for what Store owners need in 2007.
Good luck!
[From Mitch: Hi Adie. StoreSuite has SEO friendly links for every page that should be indexed]

Getting so excited about this product Mitch - any ballpark idea of a release date yet?
As far as features are concerned - most have been covered off here, but I couldn't see mention of whether retail and trade rates will be possible. In other words tiered pricing probably accessed via a separate login (or even discounted rates for different categories of customers)?
[From Mitch: Hi Adam. No tier pricing in the first release although I'll add it to the feature list for a future update]

Hi,
This all looks incredible. I keep hopping from cart to cart because none of them seem to work well enough, mainly because of a shoddy admin area. Please don't let the design of this be the last thing you do, so often they seem to be neglected!
Any idea at all on price...so I can budget for immediate purchase? Or expected month of beta? Thanks!

Mitch,
One feature that I find very useful was an addon that someone created for OSCommerce that allows you to show items from the store catalog outside of the store. For example, if you want to have items show up on your homepage that someone could click on and be taken to the store to purchase that item. With the use of a panel I would imagine it might be possible.

Hi Mitch
One feature I have seen on some other ecommerce sites is a box on right or left that displays the last few pages visited. This would allow the user to quickly locate a previously visited page. I think this would enhance the user experience.
Any thoughts?

Hi Mitch,
We have recently brought a couple of SendStudio, and we absolutely love it. It's easy to implement, customise and use. Customer support has also been top-notch.
We can't wait for StoreSuite to launch, and rewrite what eCom should be!
P/s- Loving the feature currently available, and I know some of the features we are keen on has also been propose via readers.
Super keen to have:
*reward points
*gift registry
* gift certificate, redeemable via StoreSuite, but also the ability to use the gift certificate in an actual brick and mortar (physical) store. IE: The ability to purchase a gift cert from Freedom Australia, with the option of either spending it online or in one of their retail outlet.
Ciao,
Jav

Hi Mitch,
The Interspire interfaces have always been excellent in both design and use, so I'm really pleased to hear about the development of StoreSuite.
Especially the integration of SendStudioNX. At present I have been using jshop (http://www.jshop.co.uk/) and using sendstudio webforms to run the newslettters. I hope that StoreSuite will have the ability to offer a wholesale frontend to the store in addition to the retail frontend? :)
I look forward to seeing the full list of features...
Thanks 4 all the hard work,
Tim

Hi Mitch,
Just discovered you when I was looking for an autoresponder solution. SendStudio looks great! I'm curious how you might integrate it with the store. It would be awesome if I could associate a responder to a specific product and provide customers with follow-up information - based upon what they purchased. Other features that I would like:
- the ability to distribute "product keys" (i.e. license keys)
- the ability to restrict sales by product. We would like to sell digital products world-wide, but restrict physical products to the US only.
Awesome job - what a refreshing approach to developing a product!
[From Mitch: Hi Jay. Thanks for the comment. We're actually working on SendStudio integration this week and I'll have some screenshots up soon. Everything else you've mentioned is either integrated or is on the product roadmap for a future release, so we have you covered!]

Looking great so far. 2 questions:
1. Will there be separate language files so that I can translate all the text. Looking to translate to Japanese.
2. Will there be product personalisation fields?. ie a customer can enter their name to be printed on say a t-shirt that is offered for sale.
cheers
[From Mitch: Hi JD. Yes StoreSuite has separate language files, as well as a "private label" language file so you can remove anything to do with us in the application. Products have custom fields but not in that way unfortunately.]

Hi Mitch,
Are there plans for eBay-Store or Amazon ZShop integration with StoreSuite? i.e; the ability to "publish" one's inventory to either of those sites. X-Cart does both, courtesy of plugin / add-on modules.
Similarly exporting to Froogle / Google Products, Yahoo, MSN Shopping etc.
Thanks,
Steve
[From Mitch: Hi Steve. Yes there are but we're already on a feature lock for the initial release which we're finalizing and testing internally. Future releases will integrate dozens more payment providers]

Hi Mitch!
i have already bought Storesuite and look forward to change my system for my shop at www.squashbutikken.no. I have been reading all your blogs, and there are only one thing missing...I hope you will develop a function that shows all my orders to different suppliers of goods that I am buying to my shop. We are more than one person that runs the shop and I have experienced that we sometimes order new products both and ending up with to many products. I hope you will develop a function in the control panel that shows all the orders to the different firms we buy from???? regards glenn ulrik (Norway)
